Raksha Bandhan 2025: According to the Hindu Panchang, Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is observed on the Purnima tithi (full moon day) of the month of Shravan. This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on 9th August 2025. This sacred festival is dedicated to celebrating the beautiful bond between sisters and their brothers. There is a heartfelt tradition of tying the rakhi, or a sacred thread around the brothers’ wrists on this day to ensure their well-being, success and prosperity. In turn, the brothers vow to their sisters to always keep them safe and happy.
Many individuals make certain mistakes while tying the rakhi on this auspicious occasion, which can invite misfortune. Below, we have mentioned a list of 5 major mistakes that must be avoided while tying Rakhi to ensure a prosperous Raksha Bandhan celebration.
Raksha Bandhan 2025: 5 Mistakes You Must NOT Make While Tying Rakhi
1. Forgetting To Tie Rakhi To God First
Many families follow the tradition of tying a rakhi to Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha or the family deity before tying it to the brother. Skipping this step is seen as omitting divine blessings from the ritual. Tying it to the deity first symbolises offering the bond to God for protection and grace, ensuring that both siblings are spiritually guarded throughout the year.
2. Ignoring The Auspicious Time
In Hinduism, tying rakhi without considering the shubh muhurat is a common mistake. Performing the ritual during Rahu Kaal or an inauspicious period is believed to weaken its spiritual protection. The thread should ideally be tied during auspicious yogs, nakshatras, or a fixed muhurat to ensure maximum blessings, harmony and prosperity in the sibling bond. Ignoring timing can reduce the ritual’s divine effectiveness.
3. Sitting In The Wrong Direction
Direction plays a significant role in Hindu rituals. It is advised that the brother sits facing the east or north while the sister ties the rakhi, as these directions are associated with prosperity and positivity. Sitting in the wrong direction, such as south, is considered inauspicious. Following the correct seating arrangement ensures the ceremony aligns with cosmic energies and invites protection from the demigods.

4. Tying A Torn Or Damaged Rakhi
Using a damaged, torn or previously used rakhi is considered disrespectful in Hindu tradition. Such a thread is believed to lack spiritual strength and can symbolically weaken the sibling bond. A fresh rakhi, preferably in auspicious colours like red, yellow or gold, should be used to maintain purity and attract blessings.

5. Forgetting To Perform Aarti And Tilak
Before tying the rakhi, Hindu rituals recommend performing a small aarti for the brother and applying a tilak on his forehead. Skipping this step is believed to make the ritual incomplete, as these actions invite divine blessings for his protection. The tilak symbolises victory and auspiciousness, while the aarti wards off negative energies, ensuring that the sacred thread works as a shield throughout the year.
