The Shravan Maas tale When we talk of Shiva Puja, we mean the "Samudra Manthan," which took place in the month of Shravan. Lord Shiva ingested the "Halahal" poison during the churning process, out of the fourteen components that emerged from the ocean, saving the planet. As he kept the poison in his neck, which became blue from the fatal venom, he became known as Neelkantha. Shiva Puja is performed during Shravan Maas as an homage to the Lord, who constantly grants his devotees good health and prosperity while shielding them from any harm and ailments.
