Sharad Purnima 2024: Significance
Sharad Purnima holds particular significance among all full moon days. On this occasion, the Moon's proximity to Earth allows its divine rays to envelop devotees, enhancing spiritual and physical well-being. Vedic astrology attests that moonlight has rejuvenating properties, essential for a happy and healthy life.
According to ancient texts, Brahma Purana and Skanda Purana, Goddess Lakshmi descended to Earth on Sharad Purnima, prompting devotees to worship her for prosperity. Additionally, this is also believed to be the sacred day when Lord Krishna performed Maha Raas with the gopis for the first time. The occasion is also auspicious for couples facing childbirth difficulties, who can observe fasting to conceive. Unmarried women may also fast to attract a suitable partner. By honouring Goddess Lakshmi on Sharad Purnima, devotees seek blessings for wealth, health, and happiness, underscoring the festival's profound spiritual and cultural importance.

Sharad Purnima 2024: Rituals
Sharad Purnima, also known as Raas Purnima, is deeply rooted in the legend of Lord Krishna. It commemorates the divine dance, Raas, performed by Lord Krishna with the Gopis on the banks of the Yamuna River. To honour this sacred event, devotees take a holy dip in the river and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu.
This full moon day holds astronomical significance, as the Moon appears in all sixteen phases, each associated with a distinct aspect of human nature in Hinduism. Some believe Lord Krishna was born with these sixteen Kalas or divine qualities. Others pay homage to Chandra Dev, the Moon God, through worship.
Traditional practices are an integral part of Sharad Purnima celebrations. Married women observe fasting and offer special prayers, presenting deities with Kheer, a sweet rice dessert. A unique custom involves placing the Kheer under moonlight overnight, which is believed to imbue it with healing properties. The following day, the sacred Kheer is distributed as prasad among family and friends, a cherished tradition observed in many Indian households on this auspicious day.
