When doing the Ghatasthapana ritual, make sure the place is clean. Fill a clay or copper pot with soil and seven kinds of grains, like wheat and jowar. As you do this, chant prayers to Lord Varun. Make a layered square or rectangle in the prayer room, then plant the grains. This stands for growth and good fortune.

Next, get a pot ready with sacred water, sandalwood, flowers, Durva grass, turmeric and rice. Put a coconut or garland on top and decorate the pot with flowers and drawings. Light Akhand lamps every morning and evening and do aarti. Follow this ritual every day. Additionally, make sure to offer fresh flowers and garlands during the nine days.

The rituals culminate on the tenth day. Cut the grown grains and share them as prasad with family, friends and neighbours. Some devotees also perform the visarjan of the grains to a river or pond.
