Shradh 2024: Pitru Paksha is a sacred period dedicated to one’s ancestors. According to Hindu tradition, this period is ideal for performing ancestor worship and rituals like tarpan and pind daan to satisfy the souls of the departed. It is believed that individuals must adhere to strict norms during this 16-day fortnight to avoid displeasing ancestors as it might bring misfortune. Individuals must avoid wearing specific colours during Pitru Paksha and especially while performing ancestral rites.
Below is the list of the top 5 colours to avoid during Pitru Paksha and performing Shradh rituals:
Shradh 2024: Do Not Wear These 5 Colours During Pitru Paksha And While Performing Shradh Rituals
1. Red
Avoid wearing red clothing during Pitru Paksha, as it represents joy, happiness, and celebration. This vibrant colour is considered inappropriate for mourning and ancestral worship. Instead, opt for subdued hues to show respect and solemnity. Red attire may attract positive energies, conflicting with the sombre atmosphere of Shradh rituals. By avoiding red, you demonstrate reverence for your ancestors and create a conducive environment for their peaceful transition.
2. Yellow
Yellow, symbolising prosperity and festivity, is best avoided during Pitru Paksha. This bright colour can contradict the solemnity of ancestral worship. Wearing yellow may signify celebration, which is not aligned with the mourning period. Opt for neutral or dark colours to maintain a respectful atmosphere. Yellow attire can also distract from the ritual's purpose: seeking ancestors' blessings and peace.
3. Green
Green, representing growth and renewal, is not suitable for Pitru Paksha. This colour is associated with new beginnings, which may clash with the rituals' focus on honouring ancestors. Wearing green may unintentionally emphasise personal growth over ancestral reverence. Choose muted colours to demonstrate respect and prioritise your ancestors' peaceful journey. Green attire can also signify good fortune, which may not be the primary intention during Shradh.

4. Orange
Orange, a vibrant and auspicious colour, is generally avoided during Pitru Paksha. Its association with vitality and energy may conflict with the sombre mood of ancestral worship. Wearing orange can divert attention from the rituals' purpose and create an inappropriate atmosphere. Instead, select subdued colours to ensure a respectful and contemplative environment. Orange attire may also attract positive energies, which may not align with the mourning period.
5. Bright or Vibrant Colours
Avoid wearing bright or vibrant colours, such as pink, purple, or electric blue, during Pitru Paksha. These hues evoke joy, excitement, or celebration, incompatible with the mourning period. Wearing bright colours may disrespect the ancestors and disrupt the rituals' solemnity. Opt for neutral, dark, or muted shades to demonstrate reverence and create a conducive environment for ancestral worship.
