Skanda Sashti April 2025: Significance

Among all Sashti Vrathams, the Kanda Sashti Vratham in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October-November) holds great significance.

According to legend, Lord Muruga's victory over the demon Surapadman is celebrated as Soorasamharam in temples. Devotees believe that fasting and offering prayers during these six days will earn them Lord Muruga's blessings, providing protection, guidance and a more fulfilling life. The day begins with a sacred bath, followed by the worship of Lord Murugan, where devotees offer prayers, flowers and fruits to seek his blessings and protection. They also recite the Skanda Sashti Kavacham, a sacred hymn that invokes the power of Lord Murugan.

As part of the vratam, devotees participate in charity work, donating to the poor and needy as an act of kindness and devotion. In the evening, lamps are lit, and devotional songs are sung, bringing devotees together at temples and homes to celebrate the festival. By observing Skanda Sashti Vratam, devotees aim to promote spiritual growth, self-discipline and devotion to the divine.
