Amavasya April 2025: Vaishakh Amavasya Significance
Amavasya means a No-Moon Day, meaning there is no moon in the sky. The term "Amavasya" is derived from Sanskrit, with "a" meaning "not present," "ma" meaning "moon," and "vasya" meaning "to stay." On Amavasya, especially on Vaishakh Amavasya, Hindu devotees offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. The belief is that praying to Lord Vishnu is significant on this day and will bring salvation and wash away sins. Taking a holy bath in the holy rivers such as the Ganges, Yamuna and Godavari is also regarded as very auspicious, as holy water has a way to cleanse the soul as well as bring prosperity and fortune through these acts. Devotees pray, chant mantras and perform rituals to appease Lord Vishnu and seek liberation from past wrongdoings. Amavasya April 2025: Vaishakh Amavasya Rituals
The first step in performing puja on Vaishakh Amavasya is to sanctify your home by cleansing it and creating an auspicious, peaceful atmosphere for worship. You will also need to gather everything you will need for this puja - incense sticks, diyas, fruits, flowers, etc. Additionally, it is said to be very benevolent to plant a tree on this day - a metaphor for continuity. Taking a holy bath in any of the holy rivers, such as the Ganges, Yamuna or Godavari, is believed to wipe out sins and purify the soul for blessings.
After cleansing and cleansing, the first step of the puja is to seek blessings from Lord Ganesha. Thereafter, recite the Vishnu Sahastranama with focus and devotion. Meditate upon Lord Vishnu to seek his blessings for success and to eradicate negativity. Perform charitable acts on this day. Donating black coloured items on Amavasya is considered to be fortunate. Devotees can additionally perform Pitru Tarpan, Pind Daan and worship rites to please and honour their forefathers.
