Varalaxmi Vratham 2024: Varalakshmi Vratam is a sacred ritual dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu's consort, who bestows blessings and boons. Observed by married women in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, this vow falls on the second Friday or the Friday preceding the full moon in Shravan month. Women perform Varalakshmi Vrata for the well-being of their families and to secure progeny. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is equivalent to praying to the Ashtalakshmi, the eight deities of wealth, fertility, knowledge, love, fame, pleasure, peace, and strength. This year, Varalaxmi Vratham will be observed on 16th August 2024.

Varalaxmi Vratham 2024: Puja Vidhi

For Varalakshmi Vratam, take a bath and set up an altar of Maa Lakshmi in your house. Then adorn it will new clothes, Kumkum, jewellery, and red flowers. Then place a kalash filled with water and and also place unbroken rice. Offer sweets, fruits and other items to the goddess and seek blessings.

Varalaxmi Vratham 2024: Significance Of This Sacred Festival

The Ashta Lakshmi represents eight potent forces: Siri (Wealth), Bhu (Earth), Sarasvati (Knowledge), Priti (Love), Keerthi (Fame), Shanthi (Peace), Santushti (Pleasure), and Pushti (Strength). These energies are personified as Lakshmi and revered as the eight manifestations of Goddess Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu is considered the embodiment of these forces. Mainly observed by women, the Varalakshmi Vratam seeks blessings for the entire family, particularly husbands and children. According to Hindu scriptures, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this auspicious day is equivalent to praying to the Ashta Lakshmi. This sacred vow is open to all, transcending caste and creed, allowing everyone to partake in the festivities and seek divine blessings.

Varalaxmi Vratham 2024: Rituals Associated With Varalakshmi Vratam

Preparations for Varalakshmi Vratam commence on Thursday, with devotees gathering essential items for the ritual. On Friday, devotees rise early, before sunrise, during the auspicious Brahma Muhurtham period, and begin by cleansing their homes and decorating the puja site with intricate kolam designs. The Kalasha, a silver or bronze pot, is meticulously prepared by filling it with water, rice, coins, and various leaves, symbolising Goddess Varalakshmi. The pot is then adorned with a coconut and a picture of Goddess Lakshmi.

The ritual commences with the worship of Lord Ganesha, followed by the recitation of Lakshmi Sahasranamam slokas in praise of Goddess Lakshmi. Traditional sweets and Pongal are offered as prasad, and aarti is performed on the Kalasha. Observing women tie a yellow thread on their hands and abstain from specific foods, with some regions requiring a fast until the puja ceremony concludes. Readymade Kalasha pots are also available for use, simplifying the ritual for devotees.
