The Subroto Cup Football Tournament, the oldest national inter-school football competition, is expanding its reach to Bengaluru in addition to its traditional locations of Delhi and Gurugram. This marks the first time that the prestigious tournament, now in its 62nd edition, will be played outside the national capital region (NCR).
The tournament will run from September 19 to October 23, 2023, and will be held in various categories, including U-17 Junior Boys and Girls tournaments in Delhi/NCR and the U-14 Sub-Junior Boys competition in Bengaluru. The inclusion of Bengaluru as a host city reflects the tournament's commitment to promoting football across India and expanding its reach to the South.
A total of 109 teams from 27 states and union territories will participate, and teams from Bangladesh and Nepal will also add an international element to the competition. Over 180 football matches are scheduled to be played at various venues, including Ambedkar Stadium, Tejas Football Ground, Subroto Football Ground, G.D. Goenka School grounds in Delhi/NCR, and the ASC Centre and Air Force Schools in Bengaluru.
The Subroto Cup Football Tournament has a rich history, dating back to 1960, and is hosted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) under the aegis of the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society (SMSES). It was conceived by Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee to promote grassroots-level sports in India.
