In a historic moment for Indian athletics, Kiran Baliyan secured the bronze medal in the Women's Shot Put event at the Asian Games 2023. Kiran's impressive throw of 17.36 metres earned India its first athletics medal in the competition.
However, Manpreet Kaur, another Indian contender in the event, finished in fifth place. The gold and silver medals were dominated by Chinese athletes, with Gong Lijiao clinching gold with a remarkable distance of 19.58 metres, while Song Jiayuan secured silver with her 18.92 metres effort.
Kiran Baliyan's victory in Shot Put makes her the second Indian woman, following Barbara Webster's win in 1951, to secure an Asian Games medal in the event. This remarkable achievement comes after a 72-year gap between the two medals.
