Lovlina Borgohain produced a composed and calculated performance to defeat China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 and clinch the gold medal in the women’s 75kg boxing event at the Asian Games 2026 on Friday.

The Indian boxer stayed true to her strategy throughout the bout, allowing Bao to come forward while avoiding the heavy punches and responding with sharp counter-attacks.

Lovlina remained patient in what was a cagey contest and did enough across the three rounds to secure a unanimous victory.

The 27-year-old barely appeared flustered when Bao pressed forward, instead relying on her experience to pick her moments and land clean counters.

Lovlina Claims India’s First Boxing Gold

Lovlina sealed the contest after also taking the third round, with all five judges scoring the bout in her favour for a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

The gold is India's first in boxing at the ongoing Asian Games and represents a significant turnaround for Lovlina, who had narrowly missed out on the top prize at the previous edition in Hangzhou.

Lovlina had won the silver medal in Hangzhou after losing the final, but this time she completed the campaign by standing on the top step of the podium.

She was not among the overwhelming favourites entering the competition but used her experience effectively in the crucial stages of the tournament.

Lovlina’s Calculated Approach Pays Off

Against Bao, Lovlina did not look to engage in unnecessary exchanges. Instead, she invited her opponent forward and looked to exploit openings with counter punches.

Her strategy worked effectively as she managed to avoid the biggest blows while continuing to score with well-timed counters.

The contest remained closely fought, but Lovlina’s composure and tactical discipline helped her stay in control and secure the unanimous decision.

The victory adds another major medal to Lovlina’s international career and gives Indian boxing a much-needed gold at the Asian Games.

Mary Kom had won the flyweight (51kg) title at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.
Indian boxers have bettered their performance from the last edition by assuring six medals in Aichi-Nagoya.

Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Kapil Pokhariya (90kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg) won bronze medals, while Parveen Hooda (65kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg) will fight for gold later in the day.
