In the doubles clash at the Nitto ATP Finals, the duo of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden went down against the defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury in straight sets. The third-seeded Bopanna-Ebden pair, known for their recent impressive performances, were outplayed by the American-British duo, succumbing to a 6-3, 6-4 defeat in the opening match of the Red Group.

Ram and Salisbury carried on with their red-hot form from their US Open success by leveraging their exceptional serving abilities. Their dominant performance saw them winning 83% of points behind their first serves and efficiently saving the lone break point they encountered in the second set, securing victory in an over one hour match.

Even though Bopanna-Ebden landed over 88% first serves, they were only able to win 78%, conceding two break points. Bopanna-Ebden recently finished runner-up at the US Open, Rolex Shanghai Masters, and Rolex Paris Masters.

Single's Matches

 

In the second match of Men's singles encounter, Alexander Zverev secured a hard-fought victory against former World No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the Nitto ATP Finals. Zverev, a two-time champion, displayed experience, overcoming Alcaraz's initial challenge to win 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4.

Zverev dominated with his first serves, landing 16 aces and winning 79% first serve points and backed it with a strategic baseline play. Zverev overcame a fall on his left ankle in the third set reminiscent of his earlier injury. The German gained a crucial break in the third set, sealing the match in just over two hours. Zverev, the 2018 and 2021 winner, now leads the Red Group.

In the second match of the day, Daniil Medvedev claimed a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory against Andrey Rublev in his Nitto ATP Finals 2023 debut. The match featured intense rallies, with Medvedev defending seven break points in the first set. He then dominated set two, securing an early break and maintaining control without facing any breakpoints.

The straight-sets win propels the 2020 champion to the top of the Red Group alongside Zverev, both boasting a 1-0 record after their respective victories.
