CWG 2026 Day 7: Two Boxing Medals Assured For India; Tajinderpal and Samardeep Reach Shot Put Finals

India enjoyed another productive outing on Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games 2026 as boxer Sakshi Chaudhary guaranteed the country another medal, while shot put stars Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill booked their places in the men's final with solid qualification performances.

The Indian contingent continued to build momentum in Glasgow with strong displays across boxing and athletics, keeping the nation's medal hopes alive in multiple disciplines.

Sakshi Chaudhary Guarantees Boxing Medal

Indian boxer Sakshi Chaudhary secured at least a bronze medal after advancing to the women's 51kg semifinals with a dominant performance on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old outclassed Northern Ireland's Caitlin Fryers in a one-sided quarterfinal, earning a 5-0 unanimous decision from the judges. With the victory, Sakshi became the fifth Indian boxer to assure herself of a medal at the ongoing Games.

She joined an impressive list of Indian boxers already in the medal bracket, including Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg) and Jadumani Singh (men's 55kg).

Sakshi will now compete in the semifinals with a place in the gold medal bout at stake.

Arundhati Storms Into Semi-Finals

Indian boxer Arundhati Choudhary advanced to the women's 70kg semi-finals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing at least a bronze medal for India after a 3–1 split decision victory over New Zealand's Morgan Henderson in the quarter-finals.

Showing composure under pressure, Choudhary utilized strategic movement and precise combinations to overcome Henderson's aggressive approach, sealing the win on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Tajinderpal Toor, Samardeep Gill Reach Shot Put Final

India also received encouraging news from athletics as Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill qualified for the men's shot put final.

Former Asian Games champion Toor finished fifth overall among the 15 competitors across the qualification rounds. Athletes needed either to breach the 20-metre automatic qualification mark or finish among the top 12 performers to advance to Thursday's final.

Toor, who owns a season-best throw of 21.03m, comfortably progressed and remains one of India's strongest medal contenders. The 31-year-old also holds the national record of 21.77m, set in 2023.

This marks Toor's second Commonwealth Games appearance after finishing eighth at Gold Coast 2018. He had missed the 2022 edition because of a groin injury and will now look to add a Commonwealth medal to his decorated resume, which already includes two Asian Games gold medals.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Samardeep Singh Gill also secured qualification after another consistent performance. Gill, whose personal best and season-best stand at 20.46m, advanced comfortably into the final and will aim to challenge the elite field for a podium finish.

India Eyes More Athletics Success

The men's shot put final promises to be highly competitive, with New Zealand's defending champion Tom Walsh emerging as the leading qualifier after opening with a massive 21.03m throw in Group A.

With two Indians in the final and another boxing medal already secured, Day 7 continues to boost India's medal prospects as the contingent looks to strengthen its position on the Commonwealth Games 2026 medal table.
