Portugal vs Slovenia, EURO 2024: Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to get emotional and was seen in tears after missing a penalty during Portugal's Round of 16 fixture against Slovenia in the Euro 2024 on Monday, July 1.

Ronaldo had a chance to put his side in front but had his penalty saved brilliantly by Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The match turned out to be a thrilling contest and saw no goals in the regular 90 minutes before it went into extra time.

The instance took place during the end minutes of the first half of the extra time when Diogo Jota won a penalty for his side.

Skipper Ronaldo stepped up and struck well enough, but Oblak sprang to his left to make a sensational stop.

Seconds later the whistle went for half-time and Ronaldo started crying as he stood in a huddle of Portugal players.

Consoled by team-mate Joao Palhinha and Diogo Dalot, Ronaldo was able to wipe away his tears and continue playing when the action resumed.

The match went into penalties and Ronaldo was composed enough to get past Oblak this time, scoring the first spot kick for Portugal.

After aiming to Oblak's left for his penalty during extra-time which he missed, he opted to go to the right in the shoot-out and put it into the back of the net.

Holding up his hands to the Portugal supporters in a gesture of apology for his earlier miss.

The rest of the job was done by Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa who saved three successive penalties to give Roberto Martinez's side a famous win.

"Even the strongest people have their (bad) days. I was at rock bottom ... when the team needed me the most," Ronaldo said in a post-match interview before bursting into tears again.

"Sadness at the start is joy at the end. That's what football is. Moments, inexplicable moments," he said.
