England kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion as Harry Kane inspired the Three Lions to a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in an entertaining Group L clash at Dallas Stadium.
The Three Lions captain produced a brilliant brace and equalled Gary Lineker's record of 10 FIFA World Cup goals as Thomas Tuchel's side grabbed a hard-fought win. While the first half was packed with drama and goals, England's superior quality after the break ultimately proved decisive.

Kane Leads England, Croatia Comeback Strong
England were handed an early opportunity when World Cup debutant Noni Madueke was brought down inside the penalty area by veteran midfielder Luka Modric.

The contest continued at a relentless pace and England regained the lead before the interval. Arsenal star Declan Rice delivered a dangerous corner and Kane rose highest to power home a header. Yet Luka Modric’s Croatia refused to surrender.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Ivan Perisic dummied Mario Pasalic's pass into the path of Petar Musa, who volleyed brilliantly into the net to make it 2-2 heading into the break.
England’s Control
The second half belonged almost entirely to the Three Lions. Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham, operating in an advanced role behind the striker, restored England's advantage just two minutes after the restart. The midfielder drove in from the right and fired a composed finish across Livakovic to put the Tuchel’s side back in front. The goal sparked England into life.
"Good reaction, the first half was a bit complicated for us. It was a bit nervy. The decisions we took, we chose to go safe and go backwards. We struggled to find any rhythm and didn't have the confidence to go through the gaps," said England coach Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel's side increased the intensity and pinned Croatia deep inside their own half. Livakovic was forced into a series of important saves as England created chance after chance.
The Croatian resistance finally broke once more in the 85th minute when substitute Bukayo Saka produced a brilliant piece of wing play before setting up substitute Marcus Rashford. The forward kept his composure and slotted home to seal the victory.
England comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to claim all three points and move to the top of Group L alongside Ghana. The victory also saw Kane strengthen his remarkable World Cup legacy. His opening penalty made him the player with the most penalties scored in FIFA World Cup history, excluding shootouts, with five successful spot-kicks.
The England captain was once again the driving force behind his country's success and earned the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance.
England captain Harry Kane praised his team's response after the interval. "Credit to the manager, the manager gave us a speech at half-time as if to say, ‘Look, if we lose, we lose in our way,’ and you saw that with how we came out in the second half. We went full gas and they couldn’t deal with it and that’s the level we have to set for every game," the Bayern striker stated.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic was disappointed with his side's display after the break. The coach said, "We played a very bad second half. In the first half, we conceded two goals from two set pieces, the first after a penalty. We didn’t do some things well. We conceded the third goal after a long ball and saw how difficult it was to come back into the game."
