Diamond League Final: Indian athlete Avinash Sable had a disappointing outing in the season-ending Diamond League final as he finished ninth in the 3000m steeplechase event on Friday, September 13.

National record holder Avinash competed on his 30th birthday and ended up with a timing of 8 minutes and 17.09 seconds to finish ninth in the 10-men field in his debut DL final.

Sable recorded his fourth-best time of the season in Brussels, Belgium.

Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco was defeated in the all-important event as 22-year-old Kenyan Amos Serem claimed victory with a time of 8:06.90

Bakkali finished second in the season-ending finale as he recorded a timing of 8:08.60.

Notably, it was the first time since September 2021 that Olympic champion El Bakkali lost a 3000m steeplechase race.

Amos Serem secured his maiden Diamond Trophy in the men's 3000m steeplechase.

Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui of Tunisia was third with 8:09.68 while Olympic bronze medalist Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya finished fourth, clocking 8:10.51 seconds.

Sable had finished 11th in the Paris Olympic Games with a time of 8:14.18.

For the first time in the history of the Diamond League, India had two representatives in the final as Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic silver medallist from Paris, will be in action in a six-man men's javelin field on Saturday, September 14.

Neeraj will be heading into the event as a favourite to win the Diamond League Trophy for the second time in his career. He will be up against the challenge from Grenada's Anderson Peters and Germany's Julian Weber in the absence of Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem.
