Lionel Messi has been in remarkable form and came up with another impactful performance to help Inter Miami outclass New England and secure a 2-1 victory over the host Revolution on Wednesday night at Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Inter Miami (10-3-5, 35 points) won its second consecutive match and moved up to fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. On the other hand, New England (6-8-6, 24 points) lost its second in a row and is winless in its past five matches.
Having bagged yet another brace on the ongoing campaign, Messi became the first player in MLS history to score multiple goals in four consecutive league matches, all resulting in wins for Inter Miami. The Argentine superstar now has 14 goals in just 15 MLS appearances this season, trailing only Nashville's Sam Surridge (16) in the league's Golden Boot race. The Argentine legend had produced a match-winning performance for his side in a 4-1 victory last Saturday against Montreal.
Messi now has four goals and an assist to his name since the team resumed MLS league play following a Round of 16 finish on June 29 in the FIFA Club World Cup.
The second, which proved to be the match-winning goal, came in the 38th minute on a beautiful assist from Sergio Busquets. As Busquets carried the ball forward just past midfield, he fired a ball beyond two New England defenders and to Messi in stride. Messi ran the ball down and fired a precise shot just inside the far post and past the outstretched reach of Revolution goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic.

"I always say Leo is a special player," Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said postgame. "For me, the best player that has played this sport in history.
"So, it's unbelievable because he continues doing things that maybe many, many years ago, we could not see at this moment. But at the end, he's a special player, we are lucky to have him."
The new record is the latest in an already long list of them for Messi. Heading into Wednesday's match, Messi had already broken Inter Miami's all-time goal-contribution mark, which now stands at 58. He also has league-record marks for most assists in a single game (5) and most goal contributions in a single game (6).
A few reports recently claimed that Messi is in talks with Saudi Pro League (SPL) side Al-Ahli. The 38-year-old is still under contract with Inter Miami until the end of 2025, but his potential future move is once again making headlines.
If Messi moves to play in the Saudi Pro League, he would be joining a team full of big names like Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy, and Ivan Toney. It would also reignite his long-standing rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo.
