India’s Nishad Kumar won gold in the men’s T47 long jump at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Monday. The two-time Paralympic silver medallist produced a best jump of 7.11 metres at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium to claim India’s second gold medal of the Games.

Known for his success in the high jump, Nishad showed that he can also compete at the highest level in another event. The Indian athlete took the lead early in the final and maintained his advantage until the end.

Nishad Kumar Dominates Long Jump Final

Nishad began the final with a jump of 6.95 metres before improving his distance to 7.09 metres in his second attempt. He went even further in the third round, recording 7.11 metres to strengthen his position at the top of the standings.

His fourth attempt was a foul, but the Indian bounced back with another 7.11-metre jump in the fifth round. He finished the competition with an effort of 7.07 metres to seal the gold medal.

Uzbekistan’s Omadbek Khasanov finished second with a season-best jump of 6.99 metres to win silver. Sri Lanka’s Mohammadu Safran took bronze with a best effort of 6.55 metres.

From High Jump Specialist to Long Jump Gold Medallist

Nishad’s victory is particularly impressive because the long jump is not his main event. He began exploring the discipline last year and had limited competitive experience before arriving in Japan.

The 27-year-old has made his name in the men’s T47 high jump. He won silver at the Paris 2024 Paralympics and has also claimed gold at the World Championships.

Nishad is the defending Asian Para Games champion in the high jump, an event in which he will be looking to add another gold medal to his collection.

Nishad Kumar Eyes Another Gold on Tuesday

Nishad will return to action in the men’s T47 high jump final on Tuesday. After his impressive performance in the long jump, he will have another chance to finish on top of the podium.

His gold medal has added to India’s strong start at the Games. Earlier, shooter Mona Agarwal won gold in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event.
