Star German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has made a return to his former club Manchester City after spending a year at Barcelona on Friday.
Manchester City announced the signing of Gundogan on a one-year deal with an option to extend a season further. They are in a hunt for a historic fifth Premier League title on the bounce.
Gundogan played for Pep Guardiola's side from 2016 to 2023, winning five Premier Leagues with the club.

After achieving a historic treble including their maiden Champions League title, the midfielder decided to join Barcelona on a free transfer.

Gundogan could be available for Saturday’s match against Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium.
“My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch,” Gundogan said.
“I grew as a person and a player, developed a special relationship with the City fans and enjoyed amazing success. It was an exceptional period in my life. To have the opportunity to return here means so much.”
Gundogan also shared a note of gratitude for Barcelona where he was under contract for two more years. Notably, he was told the club would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave.

“Dear culers, after just one year it’s already time to say goodbye,” he began.
“I came here to face a new, exciting challenge, and I was ready for it. I have given everything to fight for the team and the club the best possible way in a difficult season and I was looking forward to helping my teammates in the new campaign,” the update read.
“Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.”
Gundogan made 51 appearances for the Spanish club last season, helping them finish second in Laliga.

Having joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 as Guardiola's first key signing, Gundogan scored 60 goals in 304 appearances for Man City.
Gundogan recently announced his retirement from international soccer after 82 appearances, captaining Germany at Euro 2024.
