“I made the decision based on the sporting side, on what excited me a little more and where I felt I could win and grow more as a player,” Rodri said during a press conference.
Mourinho Played A Role In Real Madrid Talks
Real Madrid had made a strong attempt to convince Rodri to move to the Santiago Bernabeu, with head coach Jose Mourinho personally contacting the midfielder during the process.
Rodri chose not to reveal details of his conversation with Mourinho, insisting that the discussion should remain private. However, he was full of praise for the Real Madrid boss and the way the club handled the situation.
“The way they treated me was very good. When I made my decision, I also called him to thank him for the interest and the treatment,” Rodri explained.
The midfielder also described Mourinho as a “great coach” and made it clear that his decision was not based on any negative feelings towards Real Madrid.
Instead, Rodri's choice came down to where he believed he could develop further while continuing to compete at the highest level.

Rodri also highlighted the influence of Barcelona sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick in convincing him to choose the Catalan club.
“Deco and Hansi Flick played decisive roles in convincing me,” Rodri stated.
