APPLE'S Mixed Reality headset has been in the headlines for a possible launch soon. The MR product is expected to debut this year, according to the Financial Times. Reports suggest Tim Cook preferred the operations team's decision over the concerns of the design team, the media platform adds.
Story So Far
The Operations Unit at Apple aims to ship a "version one" headset, similar to ski goggles which will let users view "3D video, perform interactive workouts or chat with realistic avatars," via FaceTime, the report adds. While the design team wished for a delay in launch until a lighter version (in terms of weight) is an option.
To bring the headset at the earliest, Cook decided to lean towards the operations chief Jeff Williams, according to "people familiar with Apple's decision-making," cites the report. A former engineer at Apple said this is a "logical progression" of the company's route under the leadership of Cook, reports FT.
Apple MR Headset Expected Specifications
The Mixed Reality Headsets are likely to have interior Micro OLED displays with 4K resolution. Both eyes will be tracked by a camera and other sensors will help "capture both facial expressions and body movements," MacRumors reported citing The Information. Plus, the headset is expected to ship with the H2 chip and a "Digital Crown-like dial" to switch between virtual and physical surroundings. The price of the headset is speculated to be over $3,000, according to the cited source. This is three times the current pricing of Meta Quest Pro, the 'most advanced headset' from Meta.
Apple MR Headset Expected Launch
The Cupertino-based giant is expecting orders for a million units in the first 12 months, FT states, citing "two people familiar with its [Apple] planning." The headset has been in development for seven years. It is anticipated the company may release the headsets with AR and VR functionality somewhere in June, FT adds. This coincides with the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event of Apple.
