You might soon start getting up-to-date iPhones out-of-the-box in the United States. We say this because a recent Bloomberg report from Mark Gurman claims the tech giant may bring a system to allow software updates on Apple iPhones without opening the box. However, this technology will likely be limited to retail stores in the US.

The process will take place while the iPhone remains in the package without hurting the box seal of the device. This will reportedly be made possible by a proprietary system known as Presto in a "pad-like device". It can help facilitate software updation while new iPhones lie in the inventory unit. This will allow users to take home a fully updated iPhone when they purchase one.

Gurman reported that the entire process happens wirelessly via Presto, which looks like a "metal cubby for shoes". It may use MagSafe and other wireless touchpoints to power an iPhone. As per the report, after the update process is complete the system shuts down the device. Apple reportedly began testing the system in 2023 at select retail units.

The pre-sale update will be made possible via the device on which the iPhone's box can be placed to wirelessly power the iPhone and start the process. As per Gurman's sources, the service will start rolling out to stores in the US in April 2024. By "early summer", the tech may reach all Apple stores in America.

With the move, the company may aim for a more refined experience and control OS bugs (present on previous OS versions) from reaching users. Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly considering third-party partners to power AI features on iOS 18 on the upcoming iPhone 16 series. The company may join hands with Google, OpenAI or Anthropic in this regard. You can read more on this here.
