This, however, is not enough for Apple as it works to expand its ambitions in the wearable space that seems to be moving beyond just headphones and other devices like watches powered by AI. The information comes from a new report that details the creation of two future AirPods models with cameras, as well as a completely new category of wearable devices ─ an AI pendant and smart glasses. Apple’s own computer vision AI models running locally on these devices will likely let them interpret what they see and deliver context-aware responses, which would represent a significant leap forward for Apple Intelligence.

Apple Developing Its Own Visual AI Models

In the latest issue of the Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman revealed how Apple was developing in-house visual models to fuel future wearables. With Vision Intelligence capabilities powering these rumoured devices, such as AI smart glasses, an AI pendant and AirPods featuring built-in cameras, which will allow devices to understand the environment around them and react accordingly.

AI Pendant and Smart Glasses: What to Expect

The AI pendant is said to be worn around the neck or body and could feature multiple sensors and computer vision cameras. This setup would allow it to answer questions based on what users see around them, such as identifying objects or analysing food on a plate. Apple’s smart glasses are also expected to focus on contextual awareness while remaining thin and lightweight by offloading heavy AI processing to a paired iPhone.

Visual Intelligence and Apple Intelligence

Visual Intelligence was first introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro lineup in 2024 as part of Apple Intelligence. Currently, it leverages the multimodal capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT to generate results. However, Gurman notes that Apple’s own visual models could eventually replace third-party dependencies. He also claims Apple has shelved plans for an Apple Watch model with cameras.

Apple’s Broader AI Wearable Strategy
