Bluesky Social Media: Close to one million people have ditched Elon Musk's popular social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to join the Bluesky, stated multiple media reports. The great X-odus started after Donald Trump won the highly divisive US Presidential Polls in which Musk's support played a significant role.
Many users are expected to further leave the microblogging platform amid warnings from anti-hate speech groups and the EU against alleged misinformation, conspiracy theory paddling and extremism on the platform, The Guardian reported.
But, why users are shifting to Bluesky? What is this new platform? And how it is different from X? Let's shed light on it.
What Is Bluesky?
Currently, Bluesky is the most rapidly growing social media platform globally, with almost 6 million new users adding to its exploding user base in the last 15 days. The platform has skyrocketed to the most downloaded social media app in the last four weeks on Google Play as well as the Apple store, The New York Times reported.
Who Owns Bluesky?
The platform was first envisaged as a research project by then Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who wanted to create a public broadcasting company devoid of any centralised control. It became an independent company in 2021 and is now owned by Jay Graber, its CEO and one of the top former Twitter executives.
Why People Are Migrating From X To Bluesky?
The current mass user jump from Musk's X to Dorsey's brainchild Bluesky comes amid the apprehensions of X turning into a pro-right wing social media platform. The dissatisfaction among global users, particularly North Americans, with Musk's open endorsement of Donald Trump is one of the key reasons behind the migration, The Guardian report added.
How Bluesky is different from X?
Bluesky is owned by Bluesky PBC, making its ownership decentralised and unhindered by political affiliations, an NYT report stated. Like Tweets, users can share texts, images, and videos in short posts known as "skeets" on the platform. Users can opt for or design algorithmic feeds, utilize user-driven moderation and labelling tools, and access custom "starter packs" that enable them to quickly follow numerous accounts tied to a specific community or subculture.
Who Are Prominent Users On Bluesky
Several UK MPs, including Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips, Layla Moran, and Diane Abbott, have exited X. Public figures like actor Jamie Lee Curtis, naturalist Chris Packham, comedian Dara Ó Briain, and Countdown’s Susie Dent have also deactivated their X accounts, citing various concerns and shifted to Bluesky.
