CERT-IN, an Indian cyber agency, recently issued an advisory against the prevalence of 'Daam' that can steal personal data, fool antivirus programs, and deploy ransomware on affected phones. It communicates with other APK files on Android to infect a device. The botnet is circulating via shady websites and applications that users download from the Internet.

Here's how you can be safe from Daam and other threats on Android:

Do not sideload apps:

Downloading apps from unknown sources can prove to be a big mistake. Limit options to Google Play Store or the smartphone manufacturer's application store. Most importantly, toggle off the install apps from unknown sources option in the settings.

Dig deeper before downloading apps:

A user must check reviews, the number of downloads, permissions the app will require and more. Only grant necessary permissions to package.

Keep your device updated:

A good practice to stay shielded from these viruses is to keep your Android smartphone updated. Install security patches whenever they are available. Moreover, always keep an up-to-date antivirus installed on your phone.

Do not surf across malicious websites:

Clicking on a malicious link can prove a big mistake for a user. Hence, it is recommended that you do not click on suspicious links or visit ad-puffed notorious websites.

Stop before you click on unknown links:

Do not click on suspicious messages received from unknown numbers. Also, make sure to double-check the website URL before heading to a website. A spelling mistake or a near-identical name in the URL can be an indicator of an incoming threat. Moreover, be double cautious about shortened links and try to explore the full link before clicking on them.

Use firewall and security tools for browsing:

Using a strong firewall and enhanced security tools can help you stay safe on the internet.

Despite taking note of all these measures, if you notice any unusual activity in your account, report it to the bank authorities.

Meanwhile, speaking of Daam, after it bypasses security checks on the device, it tries to rob data, permissions to read "history and bookmarks," shut background processes and read call logs. Moreover, it can retrieve call recordings, device contacts, access the camera, modify passwords, take screenshots, access text messages and more.
