Samsung Display has unveiled a groundbreaking foldable OLED panel designed with bulletproof glass-inspired architecture, promising exceptional durability and longevity. Tested by Bureau Veritas, the display withstood 500,000 folds over 13 days at 25°C without any functional issues.

This innovation addresses one of the biggest concerns around foldable smartphones — the lifespan of their screens. With this level of durability, a foldable device could easily last 10 years for an average user, folding 100 times daily, and over six years for heavy users, folding 200 times daily.

Key Highlights of Samsung’s Breakthrough Display

1. Bulletproof Glass-Inspired Architecture

  • The new panel adopts design principles from bulletproof glass, which uses multiple reinforced layers to absorb and disperse impact energy.
  • Samsung has enhanced its Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) by thickening the outermost layer by 50%.
  • A high-elastic adhesive is applied across each OLED layer, increasing the panel’s recovery performance by four times compared to previous materials.

2. Titanium Reinforcement

  • A titanium plate supports the panel, improving shock absorption and structural integrity.
  • The plate’s lightweight and thin design makes it more protective and compact compared to other materials.
  • A new flattening structure ensures uniform shock dispersion, preventing localised stress on the panel.

What Makes This Display So Durable?

The flexible OLED screen can withstand extreme folding scenarios thanks to its multi-layer reinforcement and enhanced elasticity. Similar to bulletproof glass, which absorbs impact through layered glass and plastic sheets, Samsung’s display redistributes external force, preventing cracks or wear even after prolonged use.

Samsung’s Vision for Foldable OLEDs

“As foldable OLED enters its seventh year of commercialisation, we’ve achieved another meaningful breakthrough in both durability and design,” said Hojung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the Mobile Display Product Planning Team at Samsung Display.

This innovation boosts audience’s confidence in foldable OLEDs but also proves that Samsung has a technological edge in the display industry.

Final Thoughts

Samsung’s new foldable OLED panel sets a new benchmark for the future of foldable smartphones. By combining bulletproof-inspired design, titanium reinforcement, and advanced adhesives, the company has solved one of the biggest barriers to adoption — long-term durability. With 500,000 folds under its belt, this panel could redefine consumer expectations for premium foldable devices.
