Google is bringing artificial intelligence deeper into its productivity suite with a new feature for Google DriveAI-powered Audio Overviews. Announced on Tuesday, the feature will allow users to convert lengthy PDF documents into conversational, podcast-style audio summaries.

The new capability is part of Gemini for Google Workspace, the company’s paid suite of AI tools for businesses and education. With this update, Drive users will be able to listen to AI-generated summaries of documents, turning tedious reading sessions into quick, engaging audio experiences.

Google Drive’s AI Audio Overviews: What It Does

In an official blog post, Google confirmed that AI Overviews for Drive work similarly to the popular feature from NotebookLM, which the company launched last year. NotebookLM allowed users to create AI-hosted conversations summarising source material, where two synthetic “hosts” discussed and explained content in an easy-to-understand format.

The feature later expanded to Gemini, Google’s flagship AI platform, where users could interrupt and ask questions mid-conversation — and the AI hosts would respond contextually.

Now, this same underlying technology is being integrated into Google Drive. The idea is simple:

- Open a PDF file in Drive (desktop version).

- Tap the new waveform icon on the top navigation bar.

- Gemini then processes the document and generates an audio summary within a few minutes.

- Once the summary is ready, users get an email notification and can listen on desktop or mobile apps.

This gives users a completely new way to review reports, academic papers, or business documents — ideal for multitasking or for those who prefer listening over reading.

How It Works and Key Details

According to Google, the AI Audio Overview leverages Gemini’s summarisation capabilities to produce a natural dialogue that recaps a document’s core insights.

Here’s what to know:

- Supported format: PDF (saved in Google Drive)

- Output: Conversational audio summary generated by Gemini

- Duration: Between 2–10 minutes, depending on document length and complexity

- Language support: Currently English-only

- Availability: Desktop only for generating summaries; playback available on both desktop and mobile apps

- Notification: Email alert sent once the summary is ready

While Gemini automatically determines the overview’s length, users can still revisit the original document at any point from within the Drive interface.

Availability and Pricing

The feature isn’t available to all Drive users. Google has limited AI Audio Overviews to select Workspace and Gemini tiers, including:

- Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus

- Workspace Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus

- Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra users

- Google AI Ultra for Business

- Google AI Pro for Education

As part of Google’s paid AI offerings, the feature falls under the Gemini for Workspace suite rather than standard Drive accounts. The company has also confirmed that no admin controls have been added yet, meaning Workspace admins can’t restrict or configure the feature at this time.

Why Google Is Bringing Audio to PDFs

Google says the move comes in response to the success of Audio Overviews in NotebookLM, where users found the format useful for grasping complex information more efficiently.

Final Thoughts

With AI Audio Overviews, Google is revolutionizing how we consume information stored in the cloud. By turning long PDF documents into short podcast-style summaries, AI Audio Overviews could make Google Drive far more appealing for professionals, educators, and students alike.

Although initially only available to English and paid Workspace users, Google is rapidly making Gemini an integral component of daily productivity tools.

Successful implementation could pave the way for wider integration across formats - from Docs and Sheets to slides and emails - making information not just readable but also listenable.
