Google has announced a major expansion of its AI-focused collaborations and funding commitments in India, reinforcing the country’s ambition to become a global leader in responsible and inclusive artificial intelligence. Revealed at the “Lab to Impact” dialogue in New Delhi, the initiatives span healthcare, agriculture, education, clean energy, and Indic language technologies. The announcements highlight how research developed in India is being translated into large-scale, real-world impact through Digital Public Infrastructure and public–private partnerships. Advancing AI for India’s Digital Public Healthcare Infrastructure
A key highlight of the announcements is Google’s $400,000 funding to support the creation of India’s Health Foundation Models. Built using MedGemma, these models are designed to improve clinical efficiency and patient outcomes while becoming part of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure.
As an initial step, Ajna Lens will collaborate with AIIMS experts to develop AI models tailored for Indian dermatology and OPD triaging use cases. In parallel, researchers and clinicians from IISc will explore broader clinical applications of AI. Google is also working closely with the National Health Authority to convert unstructured medical records into globally interoperable FHIR standards, easing documentation burdens and enabling data-driven healthcare policy.
Strengthening India’s AI Research Ecosystem
Google’s long-standing support for Indian research continues with fresh momentum. Over the past five years, the company has backed nearly 1,000 years of PhD-level research across more than 25 institutions, with 166 Indian scholars supported under its global PhD Fellowship program.
Through Google.org, 4 government backed AI Centres of Excellence have received $8 Million in funding. These include IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras and IIT Ropar since they are in areas such as non-communicable diseases, urban governance, education and agriculture. Both of them, collectively are in line with Make AI (in India) and Make AI work for India’s national vision.
Boosting Indic Language and Developer-Led AI Innovation
To ensure AI remains inclusive, Google announced a $2 million founding contribution to set up the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay. The hub will focus on advancing AI systems that reflect India’s linguistic diversity.
On the developer front, Google is extending $50,000 grants to startups Gnani.AI and CoRover.AI for building Indic-language voice and governance-focused AI models. A similar grant to IIT Bombay will support the creation of an India-centric trait database for health governance. Additionally, all 22 Gemma open models have been uploaded to AIKosh, widening access for Indian developers building indigenous AI solutions.
Deploying AI for Frontline Impact in Health and Agriculture
Google’s support for real-world AI deployment is already showing results. Using Google’s Open Health Stack, Khushi Baby conducted over 35 million tuberculosis screenings in Rajasthan this year. Research also indicates that AI tools could significantly boost the productivity of ASHA workers and reduce India’s healthcare out-of-pocket expenditure by nearly 12 percent annually.
Further, Google.org is donating $2.5 million to Wadhwani AI for HealthVaani, a multilingual AI assistant for frontline health workers, and another $2 million for Garuda, an Indian language model that powers AgriVaani to help farmers.

Powering AI Growth with Clean Energy
Google and ReNew Energy have joined forces to ensure AI's long-term sustainability by investing in a 150 MW solar project in Rajasthan, offsetting emissions across their value chain and encouraging suppliers to adopt cleaner energy sources. This builds upon previous collaborations which added 186MW of renewable capacity into India's grid - supporting its 2030 non-fossil energy targets.
