Google I/O Dates Announced: Google I/O, the company's developer-focused conference is set to take place on May 20 and 21. The event which is held annually will be hosted at a Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. Registration for the event is now open and it will be held in both offline and online modes via live streaming. The event primarily focuses on hardware and software announcements, developer-focused demonstrations and technical sessions, workshops and networking opportunities as well. We can expect Android 16 and Gemini-related announcements as well from the event.
What You Can Expect From The Event
The tech giant confirmed in a blog post that the Google I/O event will span for two days which is Tuesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21. A microsite concerning the event is also up, with all the details about the conference, a countdown clock, and a link that takes you directly to its registration.
As a convention, the event starts with Alphabet's CEO Sundar Pichai's keynote session, which takes on and highlights the major products and software that will come out in this calendar year. We can expect the keynote session to begin at 10 am PT (11:30 IST).
Major focus can be expected around Android 16 during Pichai's Keynote session, and we can also expect Google's native AI chatbot Gemini to be in focus as well, with a new Gemini 2.0 AI model anticipated for release. The Gemini 1.5 Pro model was introduced last year at the annual event with a context window of two million tokens.
There are some key highlights on the microsite like the Google AI studio, open-source Gemma models and NotebookLM in which we can anticipate new upgrades during the event. Beyond that, no additional information is currently available.
The tech giant recently rolled out the Beta 1 for Android 16 on compatible Google Pixel devices. The update came with a new Live Updates feature that shows the status of ongoing activities such as map navigation, food delivery apps or rider apps like Uber, similar to the feature already available in iPhones which is called Live Activities.
Android 16 is also making another addition which is a predictive back animation feature to the back button when you are using three-button navigation mode. Previously, this feature was only available through gesture-based navigation when the user performed the swipe-back-and-hold action.
