JE Technology Desk: Google is working on 'On-the-Go' mode for its video calling platform Meet to curb accidental touches and minimise distractions while walking, according to an app teardown by 9To5Google. In recent times, due to busy schedules and the rise of video calls, it can be unsafe for a participant to join and interact while waking. Often it also leads to mistouches on the screen, triggering unintended responses.

While a user typically attends video calls in a seated place, there are times when a participant has to move to a different location or get going while still being a part of the video call. In these cases keeping track of UI can be difficult, considering the wide range of options available in Google Meet. This feature will be helpful for these users.

On-the-Go feature

In the screenshot, the new feature is visible in the bottom right of the menu alongside In-call messages, share screen and other options. The mode has a new icon and text: On-the-Go.

After the rollout, a user can toggle on the option in two ways: Once the app detects movements through phone sensors, a user will get a prompt to switch to this mode. Secondly, users can switch it on manually from the in-call menu.

Once the feature is active, Meet will turn off the camera and won't stream "video from other" members in the video call. In the new simple menu inside On-the-Go, Mute/Unmute, Audio and Raise buttons are visible. On the top, a "Turn off On-the-Go" option is there to exit this mode.

Google Meet is among the most popular video calling apps besides Microsoft Teams and Zoom. The company regularly brings new features to its platform for better user experience.

Meanwhile, the company recently announced an updated 'Picture-in-Picture' mode for an enhanced experience while using Google Meet or navigating between apps. A participant can raise their hand, use chats, toggle captions, resize the PiP window and more in the new layout. It will be available to Google Workspace customers and personal accounts.
