Google has always been at the forefront of AI. Its Google Assistant replaced with its updated Gemini, Gemini integrated within Google apps. Now Google’s very own NotebookLM has received an update. For those who are unaware of NotebookLM, don’t worry; we will explain it as well. So what has changed in the NotebookLM, Let’s discuss in this article without any further ado.

What is Google NotebookLM?

If you are a researcher, you might know NotebookLM. However, if you don’t, NotebookLM is Google’s AI-powered research tool. It acts as a personalised research and note-taking assistant, enabling users to upload documents and then interact with them using AI to summarise, analyse, and synthesise information.

NotebookLM New Update

With the newest update, users can now utilise the “Discover Sources” feature, which lets users provide a query and get up to 10 relevant web links summarised. This aids in finding credible and timely information and works seamlessly with briefing docs and audio overviews. Besides these innovations, the update supports multimodal PDFs, which allow users to work actively with text, images, and graphs contained in the files.

How Does NotebookLM Discover Sources Work?

With Discover sources, users describe the topic, and NotebookLM fetches up to 10 web sources annotated with summaries. These can be imported into a notebook with one click, helping users understand concepts or collect vital readings in less time.

Bignell added that this feature complements research with accurate information in a short time. Sources added are seamlessly integrated with Briefing Docs, FAQs, Audio Overviews, and other tools, enabling users to interact with the originals in a chat-augmented AI format while cited note-taking is possible.

How to use Discover Sources?

Step 1: Head to notebooklm.google.com and open a notebook.

Step 2: Tap the Discover button in the Sources panel.

Step 3: Describe your topic.

Step 4: Review up to 10 recommended sources with summaries.

Step 5: Import them with one click.

Step 6: Use features like Audio Overviews or FAQs with your sources.

If you are new and just want to test this feature, then you can try the “I’m Feeling Curious” button to explore random topics and test NotebookLM’s discovery sources feature.

More of NotebookLM Features

The upgrade now allows interaction with text, images, and graphs in multimodal PDFs. NotebookLM is a Google Labs project incorporating AI into research tools powered by Google Gemini. It is accessible in more than 180 areas with Gemini API support, spanning over 35 languages. Sources can be submitted in any of the supported languages; however, Audio Overviews are only available in English.

NotebookLM Privacy and Control

Notably, Google emphasizes that user-submitted files, queries, and AI-generated responses are safeguarded against unauthorized disclosure and utilization for model training purposes. Furthermore, users retain complete control over access and permission settings for their notebooks.

To conclude, the NotebookLM update, including Discover sources, started rolling out on April 2, 2025, and will reach all users, including NotebookLM Plus, within a week.
