Instagram is introducing a sweeping update designed to change how people use Reels. Rather than leaving it all up to an algorithm, users will now have a way to shape what kind of video ends up in their feed. The feature, known as “Your Algorithm”, is meant to make Reels more relevant, personalised and easier to wrap your head around. For years, users have griped about being shielded from hearing opinions that do not align with their interests or tastes, while sometimes they couldn’t fathom why a certain type of content was recommended. With this update, Instagram is working to make its recommendation system more transparent and user-controlled. The move is a step toward giving people more control of what they watch and lessening the power of the algorithm.

Why Instagram Introduced This Update

Instagram’s Reels feed has long been determined by an algorithm that hums in the background. It has the ability to surface content that is trending, but many feel it frequently misinterprets their actual taste. Random, irrelevant videos are something many members have complained about.

Instagram's decision to offer manual controls suggests it hopes to curb frustration and give users what they want from the service. The aspiration is straightforward: to boost engagement by showing people more of what they truly enjoy watching.

How the ‘Your Algorithm’ Feature Works

The Your Algorithm tool is located within the Reels tab. It’s a list of topics Instagram thinks you might be interested in, looking at the things you do on the app. This includes:

- Videos you watch fully

- Content you like or interact with

- Reels you skip quickly

With the use of Slovenian grammar tools, this list is opened to users and can also be modified directly. Subjects they like can be prioritised, and those unwanted, eliminated. Also, you can search for keywords, so you have a little more control of what appears in the feed. This makes the Reels experience feel much more bespoke.

Sharing Interests Through Instagram Stories

Instagram has thrown in a social twist to the update too. Users then have the option of sharing their chosen interests to their Instagram Story once they finish editing them. This allows people to define what kind of content they would like, and it means the friends can easily find similar videos.

Availability and Future Expansion

The feature is launching initially in some markets and, for now, will be contained to the Reels tab. Instagram has suggested that similar controls could become available elsewhere in the app in the future, depending on how users react to the update.

Final Thoughts

With Your Algorithm, Instagram finally makes a meaningful step toward letting users control and understand what they see in their content feed. Instead of wondering why certain Reels are showing, people now have a clear way to affect the content that appears. Though the feature is still narrow in scope, it could help make scrolling more fun, relevant and less of a pain — especially for folks who want their feed to accurately represent their interests.
