APPLE is gearing up to host WWDC 2023 event next month, where it will announce much-anticipated new iOS 17 software with a feature to transform the lock screens of an iPhone into a smart display. In the latest series of leaks, Mark Gurman revealed that the tech giant is planning a new UI in iOS 17 that will display information like weather updates, calendar appointments and other notifications in a similar style as a smart-home display on the lock screen.
The view would materialise when the device will be locked and placed in landscape mode like the displays offered by Amazon and Google, citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported. The purpose is to make an iPhone more user-friendly when it rests on a table or a stand.
As per the report, the move is an attempt towards fusing extra live information in the operating systems of Apple devices. This also encompasses Apple Watch's new watchOS 10. Code-named Dawn, the enhancements are among the slew of features that will debut in the upcoming update. The software will likely be announced at Worldwide Developers Conference 2023, which starts on June 5, where Apple could also bring the mixed-reality headset.
The updated interface will be similar to Android OS's "more basic" UI in 2019. Moreover, Amazon has a competitive option on its tablets. On the iPhone, bright text, pasted on a dark background, will facilitate readability. The feature will add to the existing functionality of widgets that allows for snippets of news, temperatures and more available on iOS 16 in the portrait lock screen mode.
Further, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant is spending time to bring a "horizontal interface" to iPad tablets. But the plans will materialise at a slower pace than iOS. Apple is also exploring options to transform devices into "smart-home" displays, Gurman adds. This includes a "low-cost tablet" that could have magnet attachments. It may be used to control things like lights, stream video, manage FaceTime chats and more.
