JioTele OS for Smart TVs: On Tuesday, Reliance Jio made a pretty big announcement by launching JioTele OS, India's first-ever operating system made specifically for smart TVs. With this new move, Jio is aiming to meet the growing demand for smart TVs while making sure consumers can enjoy a top-notch experience without breaking the bank.
According to Jio, JioTele OS is a “next-generation platform,” designed to offer Indian users a smoother and more personalized entertainment experience. It’s supposed to fix some common issues with smart TVs, like limited customization options, poor access to regional content, and clunky user interfaces.
The first smart TVs running the JioTele OS will hit the market on February 21, 2025. You’ll be able to find them from brands like Thomson, Kodak, BPL, and JVC, with more brands set to join later in the year. This move comes as the number of connected TV households in India continues to rise, with about 35 million homes already using smart TVs. With digital entertainment on the up, Jio hopes this platform will be a game-changer for Indian homes.
One thing Jio highlighted is that many people find their current smart TVs to be a bit limited, with features that don’t always meet expectations. JioTele OS aims to fix that by offering AI-powered content recommendations, better integration of both global and local content, and smooth app support. Plus, regular updates should keep things running fresh.
Of course, this puts Jio in direct competition with Android TV, WebOS, and Samsung’s Tizen. But with India’s smart TV market being worth around $6 billion, Jio sees a real opportunity to carve out its space.
The smart TV market may not be growing as quickly as it once did, but changes in the Union Budget—like a reduction in customs duties for display parts—could help bring prices down for both companies and consumers. This could lead to even more growth in the coming years.
Overall, JioTele OS seems like a smart move from Jio, offering a platform that’s affordable, customizable, and packed with content. If the company can deliver on its promises, it could make a serious impact on the Indian smart TV scene.
