A SOFTWARE engineer, employed at an IT company to earn extra income, joined a 'like video and earn money' job that duped him for over Rs 42 lakh. It was a scam aimed to hoard money from the victim, police said on Saturday, as per PTI.

The man from Gurgaon was tempted into earning attractive cash amounts by liking videos on the popular media-sharing app YouTube. He was added to a Telegram group and asked to invest money with the claim of "assured" returns. According to the report filed by Sector 102 resident, on March 24, the person received the message to earn income through a part-time job of video engagement through likes.

"When I agreed to work with them, a woman named Divya added me to a group on Telegram app. She asked me to invest money with the claim of assured better returns. On the pretext of a task, they had asked me to invest and I transferred a total of ₹ 42,31,600 from mine and my wife's bank accounts," the complainant said, as per the news agency.

"Besides Divya, other people named Kamal, Ankit, Bhoomi, Harsh confirmed the transaction and soon after told me that I have earned ₹ 69 lakh plus profit. But they did not allow me to withdraw the money. They then asked me to transfer ₹ 11,000 more, which seemed fishy to me and I moved to police," he added.

A First Information Report(FIR) was filed against unknown scammers under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act at cybercrime, west police station on Friday. A senior police official said the bank details were retrieved and an investigation is underway.

On a similar note, a Mumbai-based teacher was scammed of Rs 80,000 when a fraudster, claiming to be an EPFO associate, reached out to her, ET Now reported. The teacher downloaded a remote access app and entered the bank details with the PIN.
