Meta, a popular social media giant, which owns Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly going to introduce AI-powered personas for the platforms next month. With this move, the company aims to help the users by letting them search, get recommendations, engage with the products, and boost engagement in a new and much easier way. The tech giant has been developing prototypes for chatbots that can have conversations with its roughly four billion users, the Financial Times reports, citing sources.
The chatbots might each have their own personality, for example, one might offer travel advice "in the style of a surfer" and another might speak in the voice of former US President Abraham Lincoln.
Meta To Tackle Competition With New AI Personas?
The chatbots could be used to showcase Meta's AI capabilities as the company competes with Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google's Bard. Built-in chatbots could be a way to increase engagement with services like Facebook and Instagram in the face of competition from the Chinese short-video app TikTok in the global markets.

Facebook And Instagram Engagement
The new AI-based chatbots can collect vast amounts of data on users' interests, helping Meta target users with more relevant content and ads, hence can be used to boost engagement. According to the reports, Meta’s major stream of revenue is advertising and with this move, it will be able to increase its profits.
However, the new additions have raised major concerns about privacy and potential nudging as well. The report suggests that, once the users interact, a lot of important information can be exposed to the company.
