New Dehi | Jagran Technology Desk: In what could be a utilitarian use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Microsoft is testing as automated driving license testing system in India. The company is testing this system in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun.

The automated tests are happening at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Dehradun, courtesy of a Microsoft project knowns as HAMS. With the help of this technique, one would be able to monitor the driver through his/her smartphone’s front and rear camera. Apart from it, one can also monitor the road during the driving test.

“It is a significant step towards the Transport Department’s goal of providing efficient, world-leading services to the citizens of Uttarakhand. We are proud to be among the pioneers of the application of AI to enhance road safety,” said Shailesh Bagauli, IAS, secretary of government of Uttarakhand.

What is HAMS and how it will work?

HAMS or Harnessing Automobile Systems will use low cost sensing device to construct a virtual harness for vehicles. The goal of HAMS is to monitor the state of the driver and how the vehicle is driven in context of the environment when the vehicle is driven.

HAMS simply uses a smartphone’s front and rear cameras and other sensors to monitor the driver (their gaze), and the road ahead of them.

“The main challenge is the traditional driver’s license test is the burden placed on the human evaluators and the resulting subjectivity that a candidate faces. Automation using HAMS technoloy can not only help relieve evaluators of the burden but also make the process objective and transport candidates,” said Venkar Padmanabhan, Deputy Managing Director, Microsoft Research India.
