NETFLIX, a popular video streaming platform that has been working on limiting password sharing in order to boost its dipping revenue, has announced that each additional member who can use the service outside the user’s household will need to pay $7.99 extra each month in a new update.
The company has been experimenting with borrower or shared accounts where users can add any other extra users for a higher price. It was even experimenting with transfer viewing profiles to separate accounts in a few countries and now the company has expanded to over 100 countries.
The list of countries includes the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil. In an email sent to the account holders, the company clearly stated that the accounts will be exclusively limited to a single household.
According to a statement released by Netflix late on Tuesday, "We will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in the United States. A Netflix account is only meant for use by one household, according to the company. Every member of the household is able to use Netflix wherever they are, whether they are at home, travelling, or on vacation, and they can benefit from new features like Manage Access and Devices and Transfer Profile.`
Up to two additional members may be added by those who purchase the Netflix Premium package with 4K streaming, but each one will still cost an additional $7.99.For each additional member, Netflix in the UK will charge subscribers 4.99 pounds per month. There isn't currently a way to add more members to the cheapest plans, Basic or Standard with Ads, which cost $9.99 and $6.99 per month, respectively.
Till now the company has been experimenting with paid password sharing in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain from February before rolling out the plan.
In its first-quarter 2023 earnings report, the company stated, "We are planning on a broad rollout, including in the US, in Q2. The company continued, "Paid sharing is another important initiative as widespread account sharing (over 100 million households) undermines our ability to build our business and invest in and improve Netflix for our paying members".
