Perplexity AI Assistant Launched: Perplexity, a new artificial intelligence startup with Nvidia and Jeff Bezos at its helm, has launched its innovative AI assistant, Perplexity Assistant, which will cater specifically to Android devices. Perplexity faces direct competition from other industry leaders like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Apple’s Siri, and Amazon’s Alexa, with its launch it is sure to make waves in the market.
Perplexity Assistant which is available in 15 languages on the Google Play Store, comes with a range of practical features for its users, such as booking dinner reservations, ordering rides, and setting reminders. The app is already gaining ground and there might be plans to extend it to iOS devices as well, obviously which is completely dependent on Apple's approval.
“We’d love to make it available on iOS, and if Apple gives us the right permissions, we’ll make it happen,” a Perplexity spokesperson commented, signaling the startup’s intentions to broaden its platform compatibility.
With the launch of Perplexity, it is quite evident that the AI assistance space will now face much more steeper competition, a market that is already populated by heavyweights like Apple and Amazon. Another competitor, OpenAI is also making advances in this market and has unveiled AI tools like Tasks, which is currently available to subscribers of ChatGPT Team and Pro. Now with the growing competition both, Apple and Amazon are in a continuous race to refine their voice assistants to maintain their edge in the market and hold the space. Apple has recently enhanced Siri with advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities, while also integrating features from ChatGPT for users who opt in. In a similar vein, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy teased an upcoming Alexa update, expected in the near future.
The main difference that sets Perplexity apart from other voice assistants is its focus on performing actionable tasks such as booking a restaurant or ride-hailing that other AI assistants are not capable of performing currently and are still stuck with answering queries only. Perplexity has also positioned itself as a global player, as it features the support of multiple languages.
Backed by Nvidia and Jeff Bezos, the startup looks to combine cutting-edge AI with user-friendly functionality, carving out its unique position in the increasingly competitive AI assistant landscape.
