Perplexity AI, the Nvidia-backed startup, is now aiming for a decisive entry into the mobile market. In order to take on Google’s search monopoly, the company is in talks with leading device manufacturers to have the Comet AI-centric browser pre-installed on upcoming smartphones.

Per Reuters, CEO Aravind Srinivas plans to have Comet function either as the default browser or as a pre-loaded application, replicating the early Chrome and Safari distribution tactics. Given that Chrome and Safari presently command 94 per cent of mobile web traffic, the startup is positioning Comet as a credible and novel contender.

Comet Browser: AI Assistant Meets Web Browser

Comet is not your traditional browser; instead, it was designed as an AI assistant with web content display capabilities.

  • AI-enabled features: Comet provides summaries for content pages, manage events and events calendars and draft email replies as needed; it can even sync up calendaring systems for scheduling purposes.
  • Chromium foundation: Comet builds on Chrome and Edge's architecture for speed and compatibility, providing users with a unified user experience encompassing search, browsing, and productivity tasks in an integrated workflow.

Partnership Talks with Samsung and Apple

In June 2025, Bloomberg mentioned that Perplexity was going for a strategic conversations with Samsung Electronics and Apple to embed its AI search capabilities directly into their devices. Such integration would deepen the functionality of built-in personal assistants like Bixby and Siri, equipping them with state-of-the-art, AI-driven search prowess that exceeds the capabilities of traditional search engines.

Concurrently, Apple has examined the option of acquiring Perplexity AI, a signal of the startup’s escalating valuation and its growing leverage within the AI-oriented technology sector.

Why Perplexity Built Comet Browser

The Comet browser was conceived after Google declined Perplexity’s request to be established as an optional default search engine within Chrome. Rather than seeking a foothold within established frameworks, CEO Srinivas directed resources to a dedicated browser, engineered to offer a differentiated and fully independent AI search experience while preserving the company’s commitment to openness.

Through its decisive rollout of Comet, Perplexity is targeting an outright challenge to Google’s supremacy in mobile search. By converging generative AI productivity features with search, the firm articulates a compelling and cohesive value proposition for smartphone users. Should negotiations with either Samsung or Apple reach fruition, Perplexity would strengthen its position as a viable disruptor in the global browser segment.
