Reliance Jio 6G: Jio is stepping up its game in next-gen telecom innovation. According to Reliance Industries’ latest annual report, the company is actively working on 6G technology and has its sights set on becoming a global leader in the field.
The report highlights Jio’s massive data dominance—it's now the world’s largest data operator, handling over 17 exabytes of data every month and commanding nearly 60% of India’s wireless data traffic.
“Jio continues to work on future communication technologies and is actively researching and developing 6G technology, aiming to be a global leader in its development and deployment,” the company noted.

Over the past decade, Jio has rapidly evolved India’s digital landscape. From early 4G investments in 2016 to launching standalone 5G in 2022 and fixed wireless access (FWA) in 2024, the telecom giant has consistently moved ahead of the curve. As the report puts it, “In less than a decade, Jio has driven India’s transition from data darkness to data abundance with its vision and ahead-of-the-curve investments in 4G pre-2016, fibre-to-the-home in 2018, standalone 5G in 2022, and FWA (fixed wireless access) in 2024.”
The company isn’t stopping at terrestrial networks. It’s also building its own satellite communication platform and working with SpaceX to offer Starlink’s broadband internet services in India.
As of March 2025, Jio had around 191 million 5G users, who contributed about 45% of the company’s total wireless data traffic. On the broadband front, it had connected nearly 18 million homes and accounted for about 85% of all new additions in the industry during the financial year.
Jio is also pushing toward a greener future. It plans to switch to 100% renewable electricity by FY 2029-30 and aims to be fully green by 2030, sourcing energy from both its own and third-party plants. The broader Reliance Group is working toward a net-zero carbon footprint by 2035.
The report also highlighted Jio’s energy efficiency leadership. “Jio’s operations are also significantly more energy efficient as compared to its global peers. GSMAi, in its March 2025 report on an energy benchmarking study, recognised that energy per data traffic (kWh/GB) for Jio is around 30 per cent of the global average,” it stated.
Additionally, Jio is collaborating with the government’s IndiaAI mission to help develop a national AI ecosystem—a move that’s expected to demand significant energy resources due to the heavy data processing involved in high-performance computing.
In short, Jio isn’t just leading India’s digital revolution—it’s aiming to define the future of global connectivity, sustainable operations, and AI innovation.
