For most of human history, maps flattened the world. Cities became outlines, buildings turned into coloured blocks, and entire neighbourhoods were reduced to symbols. That limitation is now being challenged by a remarkable scientific effort that has mapped an estimated 2.75 billion buildings across the planet in three dimensions.
The project, called GlobalBuildingAtlas, offers an interactive global map where you can zoom in almost anywhere on Earth and often spot your own home. Instead of simply showing where buildings exist, it shows how they rise from the ground. Dense city centres suddenly look like vertical forests, while small towns and rural regions reveal their low-rise, spread-out nature. Urban form stops being abstract and becomes instantly readable.

How billions of buildings were mapped in 3D
It's not feasible to go around looking at all the buildings manually. To solve it, researchers relied heavily on artificial intelligence and satellite images. Learning systems were then trained on huge sets of high-resolution satellite images with the aim of detecting footprints and estimating height.
The system examines visual signals like shadows, topography and nearby architectural structures to predict the likely height of a building. By mixing it up with global elevation data, we create basic 3D shapes. The result is what scientists would describe as a Level of Detail 1 model: no architectural flourishes, but accurate footprints, heights and volumes.
That consistency matters. It includes approximately 97 per cent of all the world’s buildings, so it’s the most detailed global building dataset ever made. Just as significant, the data is open and available; researchers, planners and institutions are free to use it.
Why this map matters beyond curiosity
That you can find your own house, of course, makes the throwback project immediately engaging; its true consequence goes much farther. Valleys Not Low or Small A 3D perspective shows differences that flat maps obscure. Two neighbourhoods of the same land area can appear totally different once building height is taken into account, revealing differences in population density, housing supply and infrastructure pressure.

Urban planners can monitor whether cities are growing up or out. By examining building volume instead of surface area, climate researchers can more accurately calculate heat retention and energy needed. In disaster-prone areas, the data helps pinpoint where dense tall housing clusters are as opposed to low-rise development.
The atlas also puts global inequality in sharp relief. Some develop up because they are short on land but have lots of people; others move out. These variations follow economics and planning decisions, as well as access to resources. Some scholars are even developing new metrics—like building volume per capita—to compare living conditions around the world.
