JE Technology Desk: Lately, robots and science have grown by leaps and bounds. Every discovery aims to make life easier for humans and to know more about the unexplored. In a similar endeavour, scientists unveiled ANDI, a robot having living characteristics like humans. The innovative robot can breathe like humans. As if this was not enough, it can sweat, walk and even shiver like us.
But now you may ask why the 'world's first sweaty robot' exists. Well, we have the answer. The 'thermal mannequin' machine has 35 pores, similar to human skin, that dribble out sweat while responding to temperatures and heat, according to HT Tech.
It was crafted to understand the effects of extreme heat on the human body and prepare solutions accordingly. Jenni Vanos, Assistant Professor at Arizona State University, said the motive behind the discovery is to unravel the reasons behind deaths occurring due to extreme heat.
According to estimates quoted in a Daily Mail report, 425 people died in Maricopa County alone last year due to heat-related issues. The researchers aim to tone down such numbers. ANDI is subjected to up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit heat, besides solar radiation and wind, in a 'Warm Room' to monitor the effects.
What ANDI can do?
The report adds scientists intend to use ANDI to understand the effects of steep temperatures on different body types, medical conditions and age groups in Phoenix, a place widely popular for its extreme heat. For instance, "a diabetes patient has different thermal regulation from a healthy man," said Ankit Joshi, ASU scientist. The model is customisable to test heat impacts on all such peculiar body types. ANDI was forged by Thermetrics, a US-based company and Arizona State University.
As per Daily Star, sweaty robots have been used by cloth manufacturers to test skin-soothing fabrics in high mercury temperatures. This will help companies to reduce deaths during summers across the world.
