WhatsApp is adding another everyday feature for users in India, and this one is actually useful. You can now recharge your prepaid mobile number directly inside the app. No switching apps, no jumping to payment platforms.

The rollout has started and will reach Android and iOS users over the next few weeks.

What’s Actually New Here

This isn’t just a small tweak. WhatsApp has tied up with PayU to make recharges work smoothly within the app. If you’re using prepaid, you can browse plans, pick one, and pay for it right there.

Support is already in place for major operators like Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea, so most users are covered from day one.

Where You’ll Find It

There’s now a ₹ icon sitting on the home screen, right next to the camera. That’s your entry point. Tap it, and you’re inside the payments section where recharges, UPI transfers, and even metro tickets (in select cities) live.

You’ll also see the option inside chats, which means you can send money or recharge while you’re mid-conversation.

How It Works In Real Life

The flow is simple enough that you won’t need to figure things out:

Tap the ₹ icon, choose mobile recharge, enter a number (yours or someone else’s), confirm the operator, pick a plan, and pay. UPI works here as expected, so you’ll just enter your PIN to complete the transaction. Once done, WhatsApp shows you the confirmation and saves it in your payment history.

Why This Matters

This is WhatsApp doing what it’s been quietly building towards in India for a while. Payments, bill pay, metro tickets, and now recharges, all sitting inside one app.

For users, it just means fewer steps. For WhatsApp, it means becoming something bigger than a messaging app. The real question is whether people actually start using it this way, or if they stick to the apps they’re already comfortable with.
