Whatsapp introduces New Year 2026 features WhatsApp has announced a bunch of new feature offerings as it gears up for what it claims is the biggest day on the platform. New Year’s Day in particular is the peak of activity, according to the Meta-owned company, with message and call volumes exceeding its average daily number of more than 100 billion messages and almost 2 billion calls globally. Use spikes over the course of a full 24-hour window as individuals communicate across nations and time zones to celebrate the new year.

Fireworks, Confetti, and New Stickers for Video Calls and Chats

To mark the arrival of 2026, WhatsApp has added a bunch of party-themed features that will last up until after the holidays are over. The new 2026-themed sticker pack is now live, developed specifically for New Year wishes on both personal and group chats.

The company has also introduced new video call effects. On video calls, people have the option to start on-screen animated features like fireworks, confetti and stars to add a celebratory flair to virtual hangouts.

WhatsApp has also added back animated confetti reactions. Now, when a user reacts to a message with the confetti emoji, an animation will play inside the chat. And for the very first time, even animated stickers are making it to your status updates. Users can prepare a custom layout with the 2026 banner and place an animated gif of their own choice.

Tools to Plan New Year Celebrations in Group Chats

In addition to the celebratory lenses, WhatsApp is showcasing tools to organise the new year directly in group chats. The Events tool enables users to organise and pin events, aggregate RSVPs and post statuses all within one central hub.

Polls can help determine what to eat, drink, where to go or what to do, and live location sharing can aid them in arriving safely. WhatsApp also notes that voice notes and video messages make it far easier to be able to share special moments in real time with friends and family who are unable to join in celebrations.

WhatsApp Features Expected to Arrive in 2026

Taking our sight off the holiday-based update, recent WhatsApp beta updates give a hint of what the future holds for 2026. One of the highlights is AI-based “Imagine” tools for status updates. These features, enabled by Meta AI, will give users the power to re-envision and stylise photos, remove objects and animate images within WhatsApp.

The platform is also working on a username reservation system. That feature will enable users to claim unique usernames in advance, which could reduce reliance on phone numbers and help block people from faking after it opens up!

And on the security and utility front, WhatsApp is in development with an enhanced chat-clearing feature for users to scrub messages and media files they don’t want retained, also providing a clearer view of how much storage it’s going to reclaim. Yet another new, stricter account security mode is being worked on that packages together several key privacy and safety protections into a single toggle in an effort to protect from spam and scams.

For group chats, WhatsApp is experimenting with an @all mention option to ping everyone in the chat at once as well as controls for larger groups to avoid its abuse.

Between these New Year features and coming improvements, WhatsApp looks as if it’s got one eye on festive engagement, another on continuing everyday utility — and perhaps most importantly in 2026, on bolstering privacy.
