WhatsApp, a popular instant messaging application that is continuously adding new features to improve the user interface, is working on new capabilities that would allow users to create unique usernames for their accounts. The feature, however, is presently under development and will be included in future releases.

According to a report by WaBetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature reporting website has said that the platform as part of the Android 2.23.11.15 update has added the feature and was spotted by a user. The report also has a screenshot in which it is clearly seen that WhatsApp is actively introducing the username feature in the settings menu of the application. After the update gets rolled out, the users would be able to get their hands on the feature by visiting the Profile section.

“During our regular exploration of the new build after installing the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.11.15 update from the Google Play Store, we discovered a key feature," WABetaInfo said in its report.

According to the report, by selecting a username, users will be able to avoid relying on phone numbers for contact information and will also have the opportunity to establish an easy username.

It was also mentioned that there is a possibility that the platform may allow users to find other users using their usernames and communicate with them without knowing their phone numbers. However, the exact functionality of the feature is unknown at this time, but it is assumed that the talks will be end-to-end encrypted for the user's privacy and protection. Furthermore, the feature is in the works and will be released to the public if the functionality appears practical and sensible, but the beta testers would definitely get to try this feature, says the report.
