Discord's refusal to give information requested by Ankara led to Turkey blocking access to the messaging app, according to a court ruling, Turkish officials announced on Wednesday. On its website, Turkey's Information Technologies and Communication Authority announced the decision to prohibit access.
According to Yilmaz Tunc, the minister of justice, a court in Ankara, Turkey, blocked access to Discord because there was reasonable suspicion that certain users of the platform had committed offences involving "child sexual abuse and obscenity".
The block follows the public uproar in Turkey this month over the 19-year-old man's murder of two women in Istanbul. Social media posts revealed Discord users applauding the murder afterwards.
According to Abdulkadir Uraloglu, minister of Transport and infrastructure, the Discord platform's design makes it challenging for law enforcement to keep an eye on and take action when illicit or criminal content is posted. Security staff are unable to review the material. Only when people report information shared there to us can we take action, he told reporters in parliament.
"Since Discord refuses to share its own information, including IP addresses and content, with our security units, we were forced to block access." After fining the firm for not removing prohibited content, Russia's communications regulator disabled Discord on Tuesday for breaking Russian legislation, according to the TASS news agency.
