A lot of people are confused about why premium AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity are suddenly being bundled for free with Indian telecom plans. Here’s what’s really going on, and what I think users should understand about it.
Why India Is Getting AI for Free
The simple reason is scale. India has nearly 900 million mobile users, a youthful population and one of the fastest-growing tech communities in the world. Whether from developers on GitHub or students and professionals experimenting with AI in their day-to-day, India possesses just what the companies working in AI need – mass adoption and real-world data usage.

Telecom companies like Jio and Airtel are helping AI platforms grow quickly by giving these tools away. In return, they make their own services more attractive. It’s the same playbook Jio used with free 4G — capture users first, monetise later.

The Business Reality Behind AI
AI companies are burning enormous amounts of money. GPUs, data centres, electricity, and model training cost billions. Right now, profit is not the priority. Control of users and data is.
Whoever owns the largest, most engaged user base will shape how AI evolves, how products are trained, and who wins long-term. India is not a charity target — it is a strategic one.
Why Indian Users Matter So Much
Indian users generate extremely diverse data: multiple languages, cultural styles, opinions, accents, writing patterns, and problem-solving approaches. This diversity helps AI learn better than data from a single region.
India is also projected to overtake the US in advanced tech usage in coming years. That makes Indian users central to future AI development, not just as consumers, but as contributors to how these systems learn.
About Data and Privacy
Yes, AI companies collect data. But so do Swiggy, Amazon, Google, Zomato, and almost every digital service you already use. Avoiding AI completely to protect data is unrealistic in today’s connected world.
The smarter approach is awareness. I’m personally wary of uploading sensitive documents, personal photos or my financial details — anything I wouldn’t want living somewhere indefinitely. AI is a tool, not a diary.

What I Recommend You Do
Don’t run away from AI. Learn it.
People who adopted computers early moved ahead. People who adopted smartphones early moved ahead. AI is the next version of that shift.
Use different tools for what they do best. I use Perplexity for research and writing, Claude for coding, ChatGPT for general work, and Grok when I want lighter, less filtered responses. But I stay mindful about what I share.
The truth is simple: AI is not free because companies love you. It’s free because they want you. And if you use it wisely, you can benefit far more than you lose.
The real risk isn’t using AI. The real risk is being the only one in the room who doesn’t know how to use it.
