YouTube is doubling down on artificial intelligence, announcing a suite of new creator-focused tools at its latest Made on YouTube event. From AI-generated video backgrounds to gaming inside livestreams, the platform is leaning on Google’s AI research to expand creative possibilities.
AI Video Generation Comes to Shorts
One of the biggest announcements is the integration of Google DeepMind’s Veo 3 video generation model into YouTube Shorts. Creators can now generate video backgrounds, add sound, and even make short clips directly from within the app. The feature currently outputs 480p resolution videos but is designed for quick creation with lower latency. Importantly, it’s free to use.

The rollout has already begun in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. To access the tool, creators simply need to tap the “create” button and hit the sparkle icon in the top-right corner. YouTube plans to expand this feature to more regions soon.
More Creative Options on the Way
Beyond backgrounds, Veo 3 will soon let Shorts creators turn still photos into videos, apply styles like pop art or origami, and insert characters or props with text prompts. These features are expected to arrive in the coming months.
The AI model is also finding its way into YouTube Podcasts. Podcasters will be able to generate Shorts or video clips from full-length audio episodes. Even if no video was recorded, the tool will automatically create a customisable visual experience using the podcast’s audio track.
AI Support for Live Streams
YouTube isn’t stopping at Shorts. The company announced Playables on Live, allowing creators to access a library of over 75 games while streaming. This feature opens up new opportunities for interaction and monetisation, letting streamers play games live with their audience.
