A 35-year-old software engineer, Devika, died by suicide at her residence in Hyderabad on Sunday night, allegedly due to dowry harassment. Her husband, Satish, also a tech professional, discovered her body hanging the next morning around 10 AM and alerted the police and her family.

Devika and Satish got married six months ago at a grand wedding ceremony in Goa. The couple lived in Prashanthi Hills under the jurisdiction of Raidurgam police station.

Devika's mother has lodged a complaint against Satish, alleging that he had been harassing her daughter for dowry, which led to her taking this extreme step. Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had a quarrel before the incident.

Following the complaint, the police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Devika’s body has been shifted to Osmania Hospital for postmortem. Authorities are probing the allegations of dowry harassment and further details are awaited.

This incident comes just days after another case in Telangana, where a 24-year-old woman, A Manisha, allegedly took her own life due to dowry-related harassment. Manisha, a native of Suryapet district, had married Sampath, a Hyderabad-based lab technician, last year. She was found hanging at her home earlier this month.

Meanwhile, amid rising concerns over dowry-related suicides, the Supreme Court on Monday stated that such cases remain a grave social concern.'' A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta stated that courts must exercise deeper scrutiny while granting bail in such cases, as dowry deaths strike at the root of social justice and equality.

The apex court also cancelled the bail granted by the Allahabad High Court to the parents-in-law of a woman who died at her matrimonial home in January 2024, within two years of marriage.
